AUSTRALIA ~ The Antipodes

AUSTRALIA ~ The Antipodes
I love a sunburnt country / A land of sweeping plains / Of ragged mountain ranges / Of droughts and flooding rains / I love her far horizons / I love her jewel-sea / Her beauty and her terror / The wide brown land for me / ~ Dorothea Mackellar (1885-1968)

Inside Point Nepean

Pic by Gemma Wiseman ~ A view inside one of the tunnels at Point Nepean, Mornington Peninsula
Point Nepean is a far southern point of Victoria, Australia.
Displayed here in the tunnel is an 1854 newspaper headline representing fear of attack from this vulnerable point.
After all, Australia was still an evolving colony, and there was precious gold to be found.
So this part of the peninsula became a place of defence complete with a cannon and a Quarantine Station.

I know so little Australian history. Who was the enemy back in 1854?

An interesting and textured way to present history!

I didn't realize that there was gold in Australia. :D Opals, yes.
I love history and am somewhat fascinated with Australia in general.
