AUSTRALIA ~ The Antipodes

AUSTRALIA ~ The Antipodes
I love a sunburnt country / A land of sweeping plains / Of ragged mountain ranges / Of droughts and flooding rains / I love her far horizons / I love her jewel-sea / Her beauty and her terror / The wide brown land for me / ~ Dorothea Mackellar (1885-1968)

Scavenger on the Wing

The beach is the ideal place
To heal the fragile spirit
~
Just a quiet walk by the sea can
Refurbish
An empty soul

But waiting seagulls
Often
Propose
An alternative piece of
Beach
Entertainment
~
Their graceful
White
Innocence in flight
Can be
Another story
On earth
~
A seagull is the ultimate
Brazen
Pickpocket

Anywhere
By the sea is
Seagull territory

Pic by Gemma Wiseman ~ No human space is too sacred for a seagull invasion
~
Waiting
Watching for
Any stray food scraps
Given willingly or
Simply left open for
These thieves on the wing
~

Pic by Gemma Wiseman ~ Closer still
~
Strange
A seagull face seems
So bland
So expressionless
So snowy white
Masking
Many devious
Dark
Scavenger
Secrets
Within

But without the call of the gull, the sea would indeed be an empty expression. I love their tenacity and will to survive, white feathers blending seamlessly, like porcelain.

Love your ocean shots, so tranquil.

I agree so much with you that being near the sea heals the spirit.

Great pictures, and your words are so true. And not always discarded food. Sometimes you're still trying to eat it!

What a delightful read. I enjoyed your pictures and words immensely. I too love the beach and what it offers in solace but, I can't say the seagulls have ever bothered me during a trip to the beach. I'm sure by the looks of your picture/ poem that they do. Nice job. Have a good weekend.

Beautifully written, as soothing
as the sea and watching these
graceful creatures, you really
put me right in this scene.
