AUSTRALIA ~ The Antipodes

AUSTRALIA ~ The Antipodes
I love a sunburnt country / A land of sweeping plains / Of ragged mountain ranges / Of droughts and flooding rains / I love her far horizons / I love her jewel-sea / Her beauty and her terror / The wide brown land for me / ~ Dorothea Mackellar (1885-1968)

Smoke and Mirrors ~ for Totally Optional Prompts AND ReadWritePoem Prompt #19 Go Green

(This pic comes from a delightful collection of London photos.)
~
Each day, I travel to work along the sinuous, wobbly road known as the Westernport Highway. It is a single lane road masquerading as a highway simply because it is becoming more and more busy. But that pretence is soon to be reality. Over many recent weeks, (and more to come), trees have been felled, little hills and dales have been levelled, once proud rural homes pathetically beg to be sold and a great pall of suffocating dust hovers round all those who must travel there. Progress is a dirty business.
~
Where there's smoke must be fire
Rings of passion spiralling high
Ominous dregs of dreams
~
Where there's dreams must be hope
Curling longing spinning freely
Regressive direction
~
Scorched trees wimper blackness
In soulless mirrors of water
Waves are set to cold tides
~
Where there's a stark spirit
Iced in stagnant wisdom and grief
Lost caves of comfort die
~
Postscript: This may seem all dark and gloomy. But something positive is happening in Melbourne. “Moving Galleries” is an on-going project, initiated by a trio of haijin calling themselves Rooku Troupe. They have been instrumental in getting haiku published on decals in Melbourne’s suburban trains. ~ February 25, 2008 HaikuOz

Beautiful. The prose resonates with me - we are progressing into disaster, too. Losing so much in return for so little. Gorgeous work - image is perfect, too!

Destroying the natural resources is all over the world. I sometimes feel so angry. You post really hits hard.

i believe the majority of the problems we are experiencing is a direct result of over population.. why is it that no where in the cure for what ails us anyone has seen fit to encourage less procreation????

i do so hate to see the land areas disappearing... but if we keep producing humans at such an alarming rate... they have to go somewhere don't they?????
